On January 31, 2012 the Nambe Pueblo Behavioral Health Wellness Domestic Violence Office hosted a community awareness event on “Stalking” in recognition of January being stalking awareness month. The event was held at the Nambe Pueblo Housing Entity where two presentations were provided at 3 P.M. and another at 5:30 P.M. This event was open to all and provided a venue for learning and for sharing concerns and ideas from those in attendance. Some of those concerns expressed by community members were the acknowledgement that “stalking has, does, and probably is still going on within the community of Nambe Pueblo.” As it was explained in the training, “STALKING” is “A course of harassing behavior that is repeated, threatening, and purposefully directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear, to include bodily injury or death of themselves or a family member. Those in the audience and community members expressed; (1) fear associated with this terrorizing behavior, (2) not knowing where to go for help, (3) the fear of people not believing the victim, and (4) the fear of the Judicial System failing to act. Other concerns discussed at the event were the safety issues of women, children, and elders within the community and the need to be more involved with each other in providing services and ensuring the safety to the community members of Nambe Pueblo. Overall this event was helpful as well as informative, and in the future the Behavioral Health Wellness anticipates hosting many opportunities of trainings and events to be provided to the community on various topics of awareness and education.
